Pakistan on the Brink: The Future of America, Pakistan, and Afghanistan is the second of two books by Ahmed Rashid. His first was, “Descent into Chaos: How the War Against Islamic Extremism is Being Lost in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia”
Although Descent into Chaos was the first iteration of the story of America’s war in Afghanistan it isn’t necessary to read it to get the benefit of the immense knowledge and personal experience the Author has to offer.
The book can seem redundant at times as he tries to relay different angles of the many personal experiences he has to share with the reader. Ahmed Rashid not only has inside information from top officials of government inside the United States, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has personal relationships with many of them with good insights to share. Likewise he shares insight from his personal knowledge and relationships with many Northern Alliance warlords.
If you want to understand Pakistan and its relationship with the Taliban and Al Qaida, or the events surrounding America’s war on terror in Afghanistan, this is a must read.
How did Osama bin Laden “slip away” from capture by the US Military at Tora Bora? Why is Al Qaida and the Taliban so hard to defeat? What did the US and Pakistan do right and what did they get wrong? What is the role of India? Find out in this book!
