Reaction to Prophet’s Cartoons; CharlieHebdo

In this video, Mufti Abdur Rahman ibn Yusuf, explains the Islamic stance on how the Prophet responded to people who offended him.  He instructs Muslims that they should respond in the same manner.

In adding to his remarks, I’d like to bring up an event in last weeks news.  A fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, is under incredible scrutiny after a video surfaced and went viral on the internet.  In the video, frat members are recorded chanting,

“There will never be a n***** in SAE.
There will never be a n***** in SAE.
You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me
There will never be a n***** in SAE.” ~Huffington Post

The fraternity has since been receiving death threats.

“On March 8, an anonymous video circulated on social media showing students in Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Oklahoma singing a racist chant. Some of these students are now receiving death threats.”  ~USA Today

It seems that when bigoted or racist media surfaces that is offensive to Muslims and Muslims act offended the world expects us to accept the right to free speech.  Conversely, when white frat boys sing a racist jingle it is somehow not acceptable and no longer free speech?  Now, that isn’t to say that what the fraternity members did was acceptable, on the contrary.  However, people in the west, generally do not notice this glaring hypocrisy where Islam and Muslims are concerned.

When a minority of Muslims fall off of the deep end and issue death threats or act out on those threats, which by-the-way are contrary to Islamic teachings, it is somehow the majority of Muslims and their religion that must share the blame.

“Charlie Hebdo is echoing CEO Rupert Murdoch’s tweet that all Muslims “must be held responsible” for the Paris attack.” ~Al Jazeera

The simple fact is that it is not Islam or Muslims that bears blame for criminal behavior of a few individuals who commit acts that are contrary to their own religion.

“Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous,

Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;- for Allah loves those who do good…” Qur’an 3:133-134

“Those who patiently persevere, seeking the countenance of their Lord; Establish regular prayers; spend, out of (the gifts) We have bestowed for their sustenance, secretly and openly; and turn off Evil with good: for such there is the final attainment of the (eternal) home” ~Qur’an 13:22

We all, Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc have to take personal steps as a society to recognize and end bigotry, racism, hate and provocation masquerading as “Free Speech”.  We all must also be willing to react in a civil and intelligent manner when dealing with material we feel is offensive.
